Samsung NC10 Netbook Reviews
The Samsung NC10 isn’t the flashiest netbook to grace our labs. The white matte lid, whose only adornment is its mirrored Samsung logo, is smooth, and its rounded square edges give the system a more professional look than the MSI Wind or the Eee PC 1000H manages. The silver trim and glowing blue and reddish orange status lights on the front edge project a futuristic aura. The Samsung NC10 has joined the ranks of 10-inch netbooks—including the Eee PC 1000H, MSI Wind, and Lenovo IdeaPad S10—and it beats them all.
The Samsung NC10 Netbook isn’t the flashiest netbook to grace our labs. The white matte lid (also available in Navy Blue in the U.S.), whose only adornment is its mirrored Samsung logo, is smooth, and its rounded square edges give the system a more professional look than the MSI Wind or the Eee PC 1000H manages. The silver trim and glowing blue and reddish orange status lights on the front edge project a futuristic aura.
The Samsung NC10's three key ‘interface' areas of screen, trackpad and keyboard are all of good quality, the latter in particular perhaps trumping even the Wind's impressive keyboard in action and feel. We were less impressed by the overzealous use of printed symbols all over the case to label the ports, though, which detract from an otherwise clean finish.
Cramped and awkward keyboards are par for the course for most netbooks but we've found larger models like this tend not to be so problematic. Our favourite is the MSI Wind, as it's such a pleasure to use. Samsung has managed to pack more keys into the same space with the Samsung NC10 Netbook, the result being such a smooth keyboard to use you'll forget it's not full size. Samsung hasn't even sacrificed the secondary keys, so you won't feel as though you're buying a compromised laptop.
The first time you launch the NC10 you'll be forced to create a backup image and then you'll be able to set up user profiles. We found setting up the wireless connection, it uses an Atheros chipset, easy and we were on the internet within minutes.
You'll also find McAfee Internet Security has also been bundled with it, which is something we've not seen with other Netbooks. It's inclusion may not sway your buying decision but if you're going to use it for web browsing it'll certainly come in useful.
The two most important aspects of any Netbook are the screen and keyboard and we can safely say, the NC10 excels in both departments. The 10.2-inch screen may have the standard 1024 x 600-pixel resolution, so images are a good size. As a result, as with all Netbooks, you'll still need to scroll sideways to view most web pages.
• I was thinking in getting a small laptop as i'm travelling a lot. What really made my mind that i fall in love with a white Samsung nc10 once i saw it in a store. Window setup went easily and the wireless and my mobile broadband work properly. I made setup for different programs that i use and put the netbook on a charger after more than 5 hours working on the battery. The processor is excellent, the storage is huge for such small laptop, and i would definitely upgrade the RAM to 2G (although the 1G RAM is not bad as long as you are not working on several programs simultaneously).
• I'm pretty happy with it. I'm typing this review on it now and it's doing the job like a dream. As I'm very petite it's the perfect size (a regular laptop is way too bulky for me), and I can balance it on my lap, legs, anywhere easily and comfortably. Haven't taken it out yet, but I reckon once I buy a good shock resistant sleeve for it (the one it comes with is pretty rubbish, won't protect it from anything) it will be easy and problem free to do.
• I bought this little gadget as a gift for a hard working daughter who travels a lot and wants to be a writer. Her old laptop was in danger from hefty use and being carried everywhere she went at risk to neck and back and arms. Here was the ideal size keyboard for fingers that are used to typing at speed, and the screen seems larger than most notebooks and is bright and clear. The weight is a joy and the colour is fun- we thought about traditional black but she wanted a white keyboard so that she can sit in dingy coffee bars and work on the move. White looked dangerously stealable- pink looks like a toy for girls- it could be a makeup palette for that matter, but this is no toy- this is a powerful fast tool- internet access was a dream to set up and programmes she needed easy to install. The powerful long lasting battery is great- ideal for working away from home, and best of all it slips into a handbag type bag easily in its little protective cover. I can see a request for an external slim dvd drive eventually. I seriously do not need a laptop or notebook myself, where a student is concerned this is the work tool that they require to travel between university and bedroom and home for the holidays- sufficient usb ports- almost a full size keyboard and nice clear screen, a great processor and enough ram to run windows xp and good internet connection from anywhere. A friend has one in black running ubuntu as an operating system. We stick to the operating system we have been using for years, windows xp.
